White River South Africa

White River is a small holiday and farming town located just north of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The surrounding farms produce tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, and timber. After the Boer War, the British demarcated land along the Emanzimhlope River, a tributary of the Crocodile River. Emanzimhlope is Swazi for “White Waters.” This land was used to demobilize British soldiers, and the first manager of the settlement was Tom Lawrence Sr., after whom the town’s longest street is still named. With three irrigation dams and several nearby forests, White River is a popular holiday destination for visitors to the Crocodile River Valley and is known for its arts and crafts. The town lies 20 km north of Nelspruit, not far from the border of Kruger National Park. White River has a population of about 15,954 and is set in an area of notable scenic beauty. Compared to many other parts of South Africa, its climate is moderate, with summers that are not excessively hot—despite being the rainiest time of year—and winters that are sunny and not overly cold.
