Santo Antão is the furthest west island of Cape Verde. With an area of 785 km2, it is the biggest island in the Barlavento Islands group, and the second biggest island of Cape Verde. The closest island is São Vicente to the southeast, divided by the sea channel Canal de São Vicente. As of mid 2019, its population was 38,200, making it the fourth most populated island of Cape Verde, following Santiago, São Vicente, and Sal. Its biggest city is Porto Novo, which is situated on the southern coast. Santo Antão measures 42.75 km in length and 23.97 km in width. The island is of volcanic origin and is very mountainous, marked by two high plateaus and several steep river valleys. The southern part of the island has a desert climate, while the northeast and the higher elevations are semi-arid.
